Short Curriculum Vitae of the Director's Laboratory

Prof Chewki Ziani-Cherif obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg, France, under the guidance of late Pr. Guy Solladié. He then continued with post-doctoral achievements with Pr. Jin Kun Cha at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL, then with Pr. John Boukouvalas at Laval University, Quebec, before joining the Neuroscience department of Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, Florida in 1997. In 2002, he joined The University Abou-Bekr Belkaid in Tlemcen, Algeria where he has been holding a tenure-track full professor since.

Prof Chewki Ziani-Cherif has also served as assistant director of the Pan African University Institute for Water and Energy Sciences – Including Climate Change from 2017 to 2022. He was in charge of academic affairs and served concomitantly as consultant for The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Aside from lecturing and managing the Laboratory of Catalysis and Organic Synthesis LCSCO of which he has been appointed director since January 2023, Prof. Chewki Ziani-Cherif regularly serves as scientific consultant for the Algeria-Based Pharma company Les Laboratoires Frater-Razes LFR.

One of his main research interests is gamma-secretase structure and modulation, as a therapeutical approach to Alzheimer‘s Disease.

He is also interested in fluorine chemistry. As such, one current theme includes the incorporation of Fluorine in antibiotics as a mean to bacterial resistance overcoming. Total synthesis of potent Pristinamycin IIA analogs represents an example (https://doi.org/10.3390/ecsoc-25-11703). Another theme deals with highly functionalized chiral fluoropiperidines for drug development.

Prof. Chewki Ziani-Cherif has worked and co-authored publications with names like Todd.E.Golde, MD.PhD. Elliott Richelson.M.D., Abdul Fauq, PhD, Jin Kun Cha. PhD, and Guy Solladié. PhD. to whom he is thankful. He has also co-edited one book on “Water Resources and Climate Change in Africa” that will be published shortly by Springer Nature.
